Porte de Paris is a triumphal arch built in the late 17th century to celebrate Louis XIV's conquest of Lille. Maison Natale de Charles de Gaulle is the birthplace of France's most iconic 20th-century leader, preserved as it looked in 1890 when de Gaulle was born here. The house is modest and the rooms are small, but the personal objects, family photographs, and period furniture make it feel genuinely intimate rather than ceremonial. It's a good stop even if you're not a history enthusiast. The house tells a story about bourgeois northern French life as much as it does about one man's origins.

La Piscine – Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, Roubaix is technically in the neighbouring town of Roubaix, a short metro ride from central Lille, but it's too good to skip. The museum occupies a remarkable Art Deco municipal swimming pool built between 1927 and 1932, with the original pool basin still running down the centre of the main hall, now flanked by sculptures instead of swimmers. The collection covers fine art, textiles, and industrial design, and the building alone is worth the trip.
