Places to Visit Near Geneva

Many world-renowned ski resorts such as Verbier and Crans-Montana are less than three hours away by car. Mont Salève is just across the border in France, and Mont Blanc, the highest of the Alpine range, is visible from most of the city, towering high above Chamonix, which, along with Morzine, Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz, and resorts of the Grand Massif are the closest French skiing destinations to Geneva.

Getting Around Geneva

The Geneva public transport network is named UNIRESO. It is an interconnected system of trams, buses (TPG), mouettes (yello transport boats) and trains (CFF) in a city of Geneva. The whole system uses the same tickets. 

Free transport pass: By staying in hotel, youth hostel or at a campsite, you are entitled to receive a personal and non-transferable Geneva Transport Card for free, which will allow you to use the whole public transportation system of Geneva for the length of Your stay for free. This includes buses, trams, trains, and yellow taxi-boats - mouettes. Just ask for it upon arrival at the reception. 

Free ticket at the airport: To get from the Geneva Airport to your accommodation, use the free 80-minute ticket given to any passenger at the airport. 


Food and Drink in Geneva

Traditional foods in Geneva include Pain Genevois (a round, slightly flattened bread with lattice marks), cardons (thistle-like vegetable similar to artichoke), longeole sausage (pork sausage seasoned with fennel, typically served with lentils or potatoes), rissoles aux poires (pastries filled with pears), tarte aux pruneaux (plum tartes), and marmite (a chocolate cauldron). Halle de Rive is a market where all of these foods and much more can be found.  

 

For more generally traditional Swiss fare, the rösti is a simple, buttery and fragrant national dish of Switzerland, a crispy crusted potato pancake with an appetizing golden color. It is a great side dish to traditional Swiss delicacies such as leberspiesschen (grilled calves' livers wrapped in bacon and sage) or émincé de veau. 

 

Other important Swiss dishes include raclette, named after the slightly nutty Swiss cheese made from cow's milk, which is melted using a special appliance for melting the cheese onto a variety of ingredients, but usually sliced potatoes. Raclette is similar to the even more traditional dish of fondue, which involves dipping bread into already melted cheese. Tomato fondue is believed by some to be the best fondue variety of them all.
