Discovered during construction works in 1959 in the historic centre, the building dates to the 2nd–4th centuries AD and contains a polychrome mosaic floor that originally covered around 2,000 square metres. Roughly 850 square metres of that floor survive today, decorated with geometric patterns in marble, sandstone, and limestone. Walking above the preserved sections on the viewing platform gives a vivid sense of just how grand Roman Tomis, the ancient name for Constanța, once was.

Archaeology Park sits in the open air near the city centre and lets you wander among excavated Roman-era walls, column fragments, and structural remains at your own pace. Unlike a sealed museum, the park places you directly alongside the stonework, with the modern city visible just beyond the perimeter fence. It's an unpretentious site that archaeology enthusiasts will find genuinely absorbing, and it pairs naturally with a visit to the Roman Mosaic Edifice a short walk away.

Cultural museums

National History and Archaeology Museum holds one of the most important ancient collections in southeastern Europe. Housed in a grand building on Ovid Square, it covers the full sweep of the region's history from prehistoric times through the Greek and Roman periods to the medieval era. The standout piece is the Glykon serpent sculpture, a unique marble figure from the 2nd century AD that has no real parallel anywhere else in the ancient world. Budget at least two hours here.

Folk Art Museum offers a different kind of depth, focusing on the traditional crafts, costumes, and domestic objects of the Dobrogea region. The collection spans textiles, woodwork, ceramics, and jewellery, and reflects the area's unusually mixed cultural heritage. Romanian, Turkish, Tatar, and Greek influences all show up in the patterns and techniques on display. It's a compact museum that doesn't overstay its welcome, and the textile section in particular is worth a careful look.

Historic religious site

Great Mahmudiye Mosque is the largest mosque in Romania and a working place of worship that has served Constanța's Muslim community since 1910. Built in a blend of Ottoman and Moorish styles, it features a minaret you can climb for a panoramic view over the old city and the port. Visiting respectfully during non-prayer hours is straightforward, and the interior's clean geometric tilework and high dome create a calm, impressive space that reflects the city's long Ottoman chapter.

Urban square

Ovid Square & Statue is the natural centre of the old city, a broad open space anchored by a 19th-century statue of the Roman poet Ovid, who was exiled to Tomis by Emperor Augustus and spent his final years here. The square is ringed by the National History and Archaeology Museum, the Roman Mosaic Edifice entrance, and several café terraces. It works well as a starting point for a walking tour of the historic centre, and the statue itself, dignified and slightly melancholy, feels like an appropriate tribute to a writer who never made it home.

Entertainment

Constanța Dolphinarium sits near the seafront and hosts dolphin and sea lion shows that are popular with families. The facility is one of the few of its kind on the Black Sea coast, and the shows are lively and well-attended during the summer season. Natural space

Mamaia Resort stretches along a narrow sand bar just north of the city, with the Black Sea on one side and the Siutghiol lake on the other. The beach is wide, the water is warm from June through September, and the resort has enough restaurants, beach bars, and water sports operators to fill a full day without effort. It's easily reached from central Constanța by tram or taxi, making it a natural add-on to any Constanța bus trip.
