Bridges

Triple Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in Ljubljana, and for good reason. What began as a single stone crossing over the Ljubljanica River was expanded in the 1930s by architect Jože Plečnik, who added two pedestrian bridges flanking the original. The result is a graceful fan of three parallel spans that funnels foot traffic from Prešeren Square down into the old town. Stand on the central bridge at dusk and you get a near-perfect view of the castle hill reflected in the water below.

Dragon Bridge sits a short walk east along the Ljubljanica and is impossible to miss. Four large bronze dragons crouch at its corners, symbols of the city that appear on Ljubljana's coat of arms. Completed in 1901, it was one of the first reinforced-concrete bridges in the region, though you'd never guess it from the ornate Art Nouveau detailing. Local legend says the dragons wag their tails when a virgin crosses, which gives the bridge a reliably cheerful reputation among visitors.

Urban squares and markets

Prešeren Square is the social heart of Ljubljana, named after France Prešeren, Slovenia's most celebrated poet, whose statue stands at its centre. The square connects the Triple Bridge, the pink facade of the Franciscan Church, and the main shopping street, making it the natural meeting point for locals and visitors alike. It's lively at any hour, but particularly so on weekend mornings when the surrounding streets fill with people heading to the nearby market.

National Museum of Slovenia is the country's oldest museum, housed in a grand 19th-century building near Congress Square. Its permanent collection covers Slovenian history from prehistoric times through to the modern era, with the Roman-era Vače situla, a beautifully decorated bronze bucket from around 500 BC, being the standout piece. The building itself, with its high ceilings and mosaic floors, is worth a look even before you reach the exhibits.

National Gallery of Slovenia, located just across the park from the National Museum, holds the most comprehensive collection of Slovenian fine art in the country. Paintings span from medieval altarpieces to Impressionist landscapes, with particular strength in the 19th-century works of Ivana Kobilca and Rihard Jakopič. The extension added in 2001 connects cleanly to the original 1896 building and gives the gallery a spacious, unhurried atmosphere.

Historic sites

Ljubljana Castle sits on a wooded hill directly above the old town and is the city's most recognisable landmark. You can reach it by funicular, on foot through the forest paths, or by a short climb up the cobbled lane from the old town. Once there, the viewing tower offers a 360-degree panorama across the city and towards the Julian Alps on clear days. The castle complex also houses a permanent exhibition on Slovenian history and a small cinema that screens local films.

Ljubljana Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of St Nicholas, stands just off the Central Market and is easy to identify by its green dome. The interior is more dramatic than the relatively plain exterior suggests. The ceiling is covered in elaborate Baroque frescoes painted by Giulio Quaglio in the early 18th century. The bronze doors added in 1996 to mark the visit of Pope John Paul II are worth examining up close for their detailed relief carvings depicting Slovenian religious history.

Metelkova Mesto occupies a former Austro-Hungarian military barracks complex from the late 19th century, squatted by artists and activists in the early 1990s after Slovenian independence. Today it functions as an autonomous cultural centre with clubs, galleries, and performance spaces spread across a cluster of buildings covered in murals and sculptural installations. It comes fully alive after dark, but even a daytime wander through the courtyard gives you a clear sense of how seriously Ljubljana takes its independent creative culture.

Tivoli Park is the city's main green space, beginning just a few minutes' walk from the old town and stretching up into the wooded hillside beyond. The main promenade, lined with chestnut trees, leads to the Tivoli Mansion, which hosts rotating photography exhibitions. It's a practical place to decompress between sightseeing, and locals use it daily for running, cycling, and simply sitting on the grass. That, more than anything, is a reminder that Ljubljana works just as well as a place to live as it does a place to visit.
