Oviedo

Oviedo is one of northern Spain's most rewarding cities, a compact Asturian capital where pre-Romanesque churches sit a short walk from cider bars and a genuinely world-class art collection. Historic religious sites

Santa María del Naranco sits on the wooded slopes of Monte Naranco, about three kilometres from the city centre, and the uphill walk to reach it is half the pleasure. Built in the ninth century as a royal hall for King Ramiro I before being converted into a church, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The long, barrel-vaulted nave, open loggias at each end, and carved stone medallions make it unlike almost any other building you'll encounter in Spain. It was genuinely ahead of its architectural time.

San Miguel de Lillo stands just a short path away from Santa María del Naranco on the same hillside, and the two are best visited together. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1985, this ninth-century church is smaller and more fragmentary than its neighbour. Only the western section of the original structure survives, but the carved stone window screens filtering light into the interior are among the finest examples of Asturian pre-Romanesque decoration anywhere.

Historic districts

Calle Gascona (Cider Boulevard) is a single street that tells you most of what you need to know about Asturian culture. Lined with traditional sidrerías, it's the place to order a bottle of natural cider and watch a waiter pour it from arm's height to aerate it, a technique called escanciado that locals take seriously. Go on a weekday evening if you want to actually hold a conversation; weekends fill up fast.

Plaza Porlier & Oviedo Old Town forms the quieter, more architectural side of the historic centre. The plaza itself is framed by the Palace of the Marquis of Camposagrado and the High Court of Justice, and the surrounding lanes are lined with stone arcades, small squares, and the kind of unhurried café terraces that make an afternoon disappear. It's also a good starting point for walking the Oviedo bus connections to the cathedral and market areas on foot.

Teatro Campoamor is Oviedo's main opera house and one of the most elegant nineteenth-century theatres in northern Spain. It hosts the annual Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony each October, which brings the city considerable international attention, but the building is worth seeing any time of year. Check the programme before you arrive. Catching an opera or concert here is a genuinely memorable evening.

Campo de San Francisco is the large public park at the edge of the old town, and it functions as the city's communal living room. Locals walk dogs, students read on benches, and peacocks — yes, actual peacocks — wander the paths with complete indifference to everyone around them. It's a good place to decompress between sights, and the rose garden near the central fountain is particularly well kept in late spring.

Plaza del Fontán & El Fontán Market occupies one of Oviedo's most photogenic squares, ringed by arcaded buildings painted in warm ochres and yellows. The covered market inside sells fresh produce, local cheeses, and Asturian charcuterie; the Sunday antiques market that spills out onto the square is worth timing your visit around if you can.

Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias holds a collection that would be celebrated anywhere in Europe — El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, and a strong showing of Asturian painters — yet it rarely has the crowds of bigger-city museums. The building itself is a conversion of two adjoining palaces in the old town, and the layout is spacious enough that you can move through it without feeling rushed.

Woody Allen Statue stands near the Teatro Campoamor and marks the filmmaker's long and well-documented affection for Oviedo, which he once called "a delicious city." The bronze figure is small and easy to miss, but it's become a genuine local landmark and a reminder that the city has a self-aware sense of humour about its own charms.
