The outdoor harbour section lets you board historic vessels, including a 19th-century steam-powered warship, while the indoor galleries trace Rotterdam's shipping history through models, maps, and navigational instruments. It's a museum that earns its location.

Wereldmuseum Rotterdam occupies a grand 19th-century building near the Erasmus Bridge and holds a collection of over 95,000 objects from cultures across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. The permanent exhibition takes a candid look at the colonial history behind how many of these objects arrived in the Netherlands, making this one of the more thought-provoking afternoons you can spend in the city.

Art and culture

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, and the building alone — a mirrored sphere designed by MVRDV — is worth the trip to Museumpark. Inside, more than 155,000 artworks and objects from the Boijmans Van Beuningen collection are stored on open shelves, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how a major museum actually works. The rooftop garden and restaurant offer one of the better views over the city.

Urban landmarks

Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge) is the elegant white cable-stayed bridge that has become Rotterdam's most recognisable symbol since it opened in 1996. Locals call it "the Swan" for the way its single asymmetric pylon curves over the Nieuwe Maas river. Walking or cycling across it at dusk, with the port lights reflecting on the water, gives you a sense of why Rotterdam takes such pride in its post-war reinvention.

Euromast stands 185 metres tall in the Het Park neighbourhood and remains the tallest structure in Rotterdam. The observation deck delivers a panoramic sweep across the city, the river delta, and on a clear day, far into the surrounding polder landscape. There's also a rotating cabin that spirals up to the very top, and if you're feeling adventurous, abseiling down the outside is an option.

Markthal Rotterdam opened in 2014 and immediately changed what a covered market could look like. The horseshoe-shaped building arches over a vast food hall, its interior ceiling covered in an 11,000-square-metre artwork of oversized fruit, vegetables, and insects. Historic Rotterdam

Delfshaven is the one neighbourhood that survived the 1940 bombing raids largely intact, and walking its canal-lined streets feels like stepping into a different city. The area was once the official harbour of the city of Delft, and the Pilgrim Fathers departed from here in 1620 on their way to America. Today it's home to independent breweries, antique shops, and a working windmill that still grinds grain on weekends.

Kinderdijk Windmills sit about 15 kilometres east of the city centre and make for an essential half-day trip. The site holds 19 windmills built between 1722 and 1761, all still standing along the polders they were designed to drain, and the entire complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Arriving by water taxi from Rotterdam gives you the most dramatic approach, with the mills appearing slowly on the flat horizon.

Diergaarde Blijdorp is Rotterdam's zoo, founded in 1857 and now spread across a large park in the north of the city. It's particularly well regarded for its Oceanium, a multi-level aquarium that takes you through tropical river environments, coral reefs, and open ocean habitats in a single flowing route. The landscape design, with distinct climate zones and naturalistic enclosures, makes it a pleasant place to spend a full day even if you're not travelling with children.
