Şanlıurfa Archaeology & Mosaic Museum opened in 2015 and has quickly become one of the most important museums in Turkey. It houses the world's largest Neolithic collection, including artefacts from Göbekli Tepe and the remarkable "Urfa Man," a life-size limestone statue considered the oldest naturalistic human sculpture ever found. The building is thoughtfully designed, with galleries that take you chronologically from the Neolithic period through to the Islamic era. Plan for at least two hours. The Göbekli Tepe room alone deserves a long, unhurried look.

Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum is located adjacent to the archaeology museum and focuses on a spectacular set of Roman-era mosaics uncovered on the site. The centrepiece is a large floor mosaic depicting Achilles and scenes from Greek mythology, preserved in extraordinary detail and displayed in situ so you can appreciate the full scale of the original space. The quality of the tesserae work and the vividness of the colours, even after nearly two millennia, make this one of the most striking mosaic collections anywhere in the Middle East.

Balıklıgöl (Pool of Abraham) is the shimmering centrepiece of the old city and one of the most atmospheric spots in Şanlıurfa. According to Islamic tradition, the pool was created when God turned the fire, into which Nimrod cast Abraham, into water, and the burning coals into fish. Those fish, hundreds of large carp, are considered sacred and swim freely in the turquoise pool to this day. The surrounding gardens and colonnaded walkways are busy at all hours, and the reflection of the castle on the water at dusk is genuinely worth staying for.

Şanlıurfa Castle (Urfa Kalesi) rises sharply above the city on a rocky outcrop and frames nearly every view of the old town below. The current structure dates largely from the medieval period, though the site has been fortified since antiquity. Two tall Corinthian columns, the so-called "Throne of Nimrod," stand at the summit and are visible from much of the city. The climb up is steep but short, and the panorama over the rooftops, the pool, and the plains stretching toward Syria makes it entirely worthwhile.

Kapalı Çarşı & Gümrük Hanı is where Şanlıurfa's commercial life has played out for centuries. The covered bazaar and its adjoining caravanserai, the Gümrük Hanı, form a compact but lively trading district where you'll find copper goods, local spices, hand-woven textiles, and the region's famous red pepper paste. The Gümrük Hanı courtyard, with its stone arches and tea-drinking merchants, feels largely unchanged from its Ottoman heyday. It's also one of the best places in the city to try a plate of çiğ köfte or pick up a bag of isot pepper to take home.

Gölbaşı Parkı & Aynzeliha Lake wraps around the sacred pools and provides the green, walkable setting that ties the old city's landmarks together. The park is named after Aynzeliha, a figure from local legend said to have drowned in the lake out of love for Abraham, and the water here has the same still, reflective quality as Balıklıgöl nearby. Families, students, and elderly residents all share the shaded paths in the evenings, making it one of the most genuinely local corners of the city to spend an hour without any particular agenda.
