The Tall Hermann tower at the castle's corner, flying the blue, black, and white Estonian flag, is one of the country's most recognisable landmarks.

Religious sites

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral sits at the top of Toompea Hill and is impossible to miss. Its onion domes and elaborate Russian Revival façade were deliberately built by Tsarist authorities in 1900 to project imperial power over the Estonian capital. Step inside for the full effect of the gilded iconostasis and the deep resonance of the bells overhead. The contrast with the surrounding Gothic architecture makes it one of the most visually striking spots on the hill.

St. Olaf's Church (Oleviste Kirik) stands at the northern edge of the old town, its needle spire reaching 124 metres — tall enough that it served as a navigation landmark for sailors entering Tallinn harbour for centuries. A climb up the tower brings you to a 60-metre observation platform with views across the red rooftops and out toward the sea. The church dates to the 13th century and remains an active Baptist congregation today.

Tallinn Town Hall & Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats) anchors the lower old town with a Gothic town hall that has stood since the 15th century, one of the few surviving Gothic town halls in northern Europe. The square shifts character with the seasons: a Christmas market in winter, café terraces and open-air events in summer. Climb the town hall tower for a different angle on the old town's roofline.

Parks and green spaces

Kadriorg Park & Palace lies about two kilometres east of the old town and offers a complete change of pace. Peter the Great commissioned the baroque palace and formal gardens in the early 18th century after his conquest of Estonia, and the grounds have grown into a generous public park with rose gardens, wooded paths, and a swan pond. The palace itself now houses a branch of the Art Museum of Estonia focused on foreign art.

Culture and museums

Kumu Art Museum sits at the edge of Kadriorg Park and is the largest art museum in the Baltic states. Its permanent collection traces Estonian art from the 18th century to the Soviet period and beyond, with particularly strong rooms dedicated to 1970s and 1980s work produced under occupation. The building itself, a curving limestone and glass structure embedded into a hillside, won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2008.

Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) – Estonian Maritime Museum occupies three enormous Art Nouveau hangars on Tallinn's Kalamaja waterfront, built in 1916 to shelter flying boats. Inside, a full-size submarine, historic vessels, and interactive naval exhibits fill the cavernous space in a way that makes the maritime history of this small nation feel genuinely epic. The harbour setting alone is worth the short walk from the old town.

Song Festival Grounds (Lauluväljak) is where Estonia's tradition of mass choral singing comes to life. That tradition was a direct force in the 1991 independence movement. The open-air stage and vast sloped lawn can hold hundreds of thousands of people during the Song and Dance Celebration held every five years. Outside festival years, the grounds are a quiet, reflective place to understand why Estonians call their path to freedom the Singing Revolution.

Tallinn TV Tower (Teletorn) was built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics sailing regatta and stands 314 metres tall on the Pirita peninsula, making it the tallest structure in Estonia. The observation deck at 170 metres gives a panoramic sweep from the old town to the islands of the West Estonian archipelago on a clear day. Glass floor panels in the deck add an optional dose of vertigo.
