Trieste

Trieste sits at a crossroads of Italian, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic influences, giving it a character unlike anywhere else in Italy. Grand Habsburg architecture meets the sharp salt air of the Adriatic. Taking a FlixBus to Trieste is straightforward, dropping you close to a city packed with things to do, from Roman ruins to waterfront palaces. If you're drawn to history, art, or simply a very good coffee, you'll find more than enough to fill your days here.

Historic monuments

Faro della Vittoria stands on the hill of Gretta above the city, rising 68 metres to make it one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. Built after World War One, it commemorates the first Italian ship to enter Trieste (the Audace) and functions as a working lighthouse to this day. The views from the base stretch across the entire Gulf of Trieste, and the winged bronze figure crowning the tower is visible from much of the city below.

Arco di Riccardo is a Roman arch tucked into a narrow street in the old city centre, so well-preserved it looks almost out of place among the surrounding medieval buildings. Dating back to the 1st century, it likely served as one of the original city gates, though its popular name, Richard's Arch, comes from a medieval legend linking it to Richard the Lionheart. It takes only a few minutes to visit, but it rewards a closer look at the carved stonework.

Historic sites

Castello di Miramare sits on a white limestone promontory jutting into the Adriatic, about seven kilometres from the city centre. Built in the mid-19th century for Archduke Maximilian of Austria, the castle's interior is preserved almost exactly as he left it, with original furniture, maps, and personal objects still in place. The surrounding park, filled with exotic trees and sea views, is reason enough to make the trip even before you step inside.

Cattedrale di San Giusto occupies the highest point of the old city, on a hill where Trieste's Roman, early Christian, and medieval histories all converge. The cathedral was formed by merging two separate basilicas in the 14th century, which explains its slightly asymmetrical façade. Inside, the Byzantine mosaics in the apses are among the finest in the region, glowing gold even on overcast days.

Teatro Romano is a Roman theatre from the 1st or 2nd century AD, discovered only in the early 20th century when the surrounding buildings were demolished. It sits at the foot of the San Giusto hill, partially excavated and open to view from street level. Seating capacity estimates suggest it once held around 6,000 spectators, a reminder of just how significant Roman Tergeste once was.

Cultural spaces

Museo Revoltella began as the private home of Baron Pasquale Revoltella, a wealthy merchant who left his palazzo and collection to the city upon his death in 1869. The museum has since expanded into two neighbouring buildings and now holds one of Italy's most important collections of 19th- and 20th-century art. The baron's original apartments, kept in their period decoration, offer a fascinating contrast to the contemporary galleries upstairs.

Caffè San Marco has been a meeting place for writers, intellectuals, and locals since it opened in 1914. The interior, with its long mirrored walls, painted vaulted ceilings, and dark wood, has barely changed. The café played a quiet role in the literary life of a city that counted James Joyce and Italo Svevo among its residents. Come for a coffee, stay for the atmosphere, and pick up a book from the small in-house bookshop.

Museo di Storia e Arte e Orto Lapidario combines a museum of history and art with an open-air lapidary garden, where Roman inscriptions, sarcophagi, and sculptural fragments are arranged among cypress trees. The collection spans Egyptian artefacts, Greek ceramics, and local Roman finds, making it one of the more eclectic and undervisited stops in the city. The garden alone, quiet and slightly overgrown, is worth the entrance fee.

Piazza Unità d'Italia is one of the largest seafront squares in Europe, framed on three sides by monumental Austro-Hungarian buildings and open on the fourth to the sea. The scale is genuinely impressive, especially in the evening when the facades are lit and the square fills with people. It's the natural starting point for any visit to Trieste, and a good place to get your bearings before heading out to explore.

Canal Grande cuts into the city from the seafront, lined with neoclassical buildings and the Serbian Orthodox church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo at its head. Originally built in the 18th century to allow boats to unload goods directly into the city, it's now a peaceful pedestrian area with cafés and benches along the water. On a calm morning, the reflections of the surrounding buildings make it one of the most photogenic spots in Trieste.

Pack your bag, book a Trieste bus ticket, and let FlixBus take care of the journey. The city will handle the rest.
