Kaunas

Kaunas rewards anyone willing to look past Lithuania's capital. Shaped by two rivers, a strong interwar identity, and a cultural life that punches well above its size, it's a city worth more than a passing visit. Catching a bus from elsewhere in the Baltics or Central Europe is easy with FlixBus, making it a natural stop on any regional itinerary. Medieval stonework, modernist boulevards, thought-provoking museums — there are plenty of things to do in Kaunas to fill several days.

Historic districts

Kaunas Old Town (Senamiestis) is the city's oldest layer, compressed into a compact tangle of cobbled lanes between the Neris and Nemunas rivers. Medieval merchant houses, Gothic churches, and café terraces sit side by side here, making it easy to spend a full morning simply wandering. The focal point is Town Hall Square, but the surrounding streets, many of them pedestrianised, are just as rewarding to explore at a slow pace.

Kaunas Modernist Architecture District (Naujamiestis) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most coherent collections of interwar modernist architecture in Europe. Developed intensively between 1919 and 1939, when Kaunas served as Lithuania's provisional capital, the district saw the city's population double and its skyline change almost overnight. Walking its grid of streets, you'll spot functionalist apartment blocks, art deco government buildings, and rationalist villas — a remarkably intact record of one of the 20th century's most optimistic architectural moments.

Historic sites and castles

Kaunas Castle (Kauno Pilis) is the oldest surviving stone castle in Lithuania, sitting at the point where the two rivers meet. What remains today is largely a restored tower and sections of the original Gothic walls, but the setting alone justifies the visit. The views across the confluence are some of the best in the city. Temporary exhibitions inside the tower add context to the site's long and often turbulent history.

Kaunas Town Hall (Kauno Rotušė), the White Swan, anchors Town Hall Square with a slender white tower that has earned it its affectionate nickname. Originally built in the 16th century and remodelled several times since, the building has served as a church, a warehouse, and a palace at various points in its history. Today it functions as a wedding registry, so on weekends you're likely to catch a celebration spilling out onto the square.

Religious sites

Christ's Resurrection Basilica (Kristaus Prisikėlimo Bazilika) stands on a hill above Naujamiestis, its clean white modernist façade visible from much of the city. Construction began in the 1930s as a monument to Lithuanian independence, though the building wasn't consecrated until 2004. Take the lift to the rooftop terrace for a panoramic view stretching across the rooftops all the way to the river valleys below.

Pažaislis Monastery (Pažaislio Vienuolynas) sits on a wooded peninsula at the edge of the Kaunas Reservoir, about ten kilometres from the city centre. Founded in 1662 by the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for the Camaldolese order, it is considered one of the finest examples of Italian Baroque architecture in the Baltic region. The interior frescoes, around 140 of which survive, and the painting of the Mother of Fair Love, gifted by Pope Alexander VII, make the journey out here more than worthwhile.

Museums and galleries

The Ninth Fort (IX Fortas) is one of the most important memorial sites in Lithuania, a 19th-century fortification that became a Nazi extermination site during World War II. The museum documents the fate of the Jewish community of Kaunas and the broader history of the fort with unflinching honesty. The monumental Soviet-era sculpture outside is striking in its own right, a reminder that this site carries layers of memory extending well beyond a single era.

Museum of Devils (Velnių Muziejus) is exactly what it sounds like: a collection of over 3,000 devil figurines, masks, and artworks gathered from across Lithuania and beyond. The collection was started by artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius in the early 20th century and has grown into something genuinely strange and entertaining. It's a good reminder that Lithuanian folk tradition has a dark, playful streak that doesn't always make it into the tourist brochures.

M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art is dedicated to Lithuania's most celebrated painter and composer, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, whose symbolist canvases blend musical structure with dreamlike imagery in a way that feels unlike anything else in European art. The museum holds the largest collection of his work in the world, alongside Lithuanian folk art and a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions. Even visitors unfamiliar with Čiurlionis tend to leave with a lasting impression of his work.

Laisvės Alėja (Liberty Avenue) is Kaunas's main pedestrian boulevard, stretching nearly two kilometres through the heart of the city. Lined with lime trees, outdoor café seating, and a mix of 19th and 20th-century architecture, it connects the Old Town to the newer districts and serves as the city's natural gathering place. Several small sculptures and monuments along the avenue reward a slower, more attentive walk.

When you're ready to move on, booking a bus to Kaunas, or onward from it, with FlixBus is a straightforward way to keep your Baltic journey rolling.
