Gediminas Castle Tower sits on a hill directly above the old town and is the most recognisable symbol of Vilnius. The surviving red-brick tower is all that remains of a 14th-century upper castle, and the climb rewards you with a panoramic view over the rooftops, the Neris River, and the cathedral square below. A small museum inside traces the city's founding legend and the rise of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Worth the extra ten minutes before you head back down.

Trakai Island Castle makes for an easy and memorable half-day out. Located 28 km from Vilnius, roughly 35 minutes by bus, the castle sits on an island in Lake Galvė and was built in the 14th century as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The red-brick towers reflected in the surrounding water look almost theatrical. After exploring the restored interior, pick up a plate of kibinai, the stuffed pastries made by the local Karaim community, at one of the lakeside spots nearby.

Religious sites

Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai) is the only surviving gate of the original city wall and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the region. Above the arch sits a chapel housing a revered icon of the Virgin Mary, visited by Catholics from Lithuania, Poland, and beyond. The gate straddles a busy street, so the contrast between the quiet devotion upstairs and the everyday foot traffic below is striking. It's worth pausing here both as a piece of living history and as a genuinely moving place.

St. Anne's Church stands just inside the old town and is one of the finest examples of Gothic brick architecture in the Baltic region. The façade is made up of 33 different types of brick, shaped into an intricate pattern of spires and tracery that looks almost like lacework in stone. The story goes that Napoleon, passing through Vilnius in 1812, wanted to carry it back to Paris on the palm of his hand. True or not, it captures exactly the impression the building makes.

Cultural highlights

Užupis Republic declared independence on 1 April 1997, deliberately choosing April Fools' Day to make the point. This small neighbourhood across the Vilnelė River has its own constitution, flag, and president, and functions as Vilnius's creative quarter, full of studios, galleries, and murals. The constitution itself is displayed on plaques in dozens of languages along one of the main walls and is worth reading in full: it manages to be both funny and quietly sincere.

Museum of Occupations and Fights for Freedom (KGB Museum) occupies the former KGB headquarters and detention centre on Gedimino Avenue. The basement cells, interrogation rooms, and execution chamber have been preserved largely as they were, and the permanent exhibition documents the Soviet occupation of Lithuania with clarity and restraint. It's a difficult visit, but an important one. The building's central location makes it easy to combine with a walk along the main boulevard.

Squares and iconic buildings

Vilnius Cathedral and Cathedral Square forms the civic heart of the city. The neoclassical cathedral, rebuilt multiple times over the centuries, anchors a wide open square that serves as a meeting point, a concert venue, and a place where Lithuanians have gathered at key moments in their history, including the 1989 Baltic Way human chain. Look for the small tile marked "stebuklas" (miracle) in the paving: local tradition says a wish made while spinning on it will come true.

Vilnius University is one of the oldest universities in northern Europe, founded in 1579. Its campus in the old town is a series of interconnected courtyards, each with a different architectural character: Renaissance, baroque, Gothic. The Great Courtyard is open to visitors and the frescoed St. Johns' Church inside the complex is particularly worth seeking out. It feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a working place of learning that happens to be extraordinarily beautiful.

Viewpoint

Three Crosses Monument stands on a hill east of the old town and offers one of the best elevated views of Vilnius. The white concrete crosses visible from much of the city centre are a 20th-century reconstruction of an earlier monument, and the short uphill walk through Kalnai Park is pleasant in any season. Arrive around sunset and the view across the old town rooftops, with the cathedral and castle hill in the foreground, is about as good as the city gets.
