Iconic wineries

Cricova Winery is an underground city carved out of limestone, with 120 kilometres of tunnels running beneath the town of Cricova, about 15 kilometres north of Chisinau. Founded in 1952, the cellars hold millions of bottles and are toured by electric vehicle, winding past galleries dedicated to sparkling wine production and a remarkable national collection. Book a guided tour in advance; it runs for a couple of hours and includes a tasting that makes the bus journey here feel very well spent.

Mileștii Mici Winery holds the Guinness World Record for the largest wine collection on the planet, with close to two million bottles stored in its vast network of underground galleries. Tours are done by car along the underground "streets," each named after a grape variety, which gives the whole experience a surreal, quietly cinematic quality.

National History Museum of Moldova covers the full sweep of Moldovan history, from prehistoric artefacts and Dacian treasures through to the Soviet period and independence. The building itself is an imposing presence on the central boulevard, and the collection inside is genuinely substantial. The highlight for many visitors is the scale model of ancient Orheiul Vechi, which puts the region's deep historical roots into vivid perspective.

Chișinău Ethnographic and Natural History Museum offers a different kind of depth, focusing on the natural environment and folk traditions of Moldova. Displays of traditional costumes, household objects, and regional crafts sit alongside natural history exhibits covering local flora, fauna, and geology. It's a compact but well-curated space that gives you a grounded sense of what everyday Moldovan life has looked like across the centuries.

Triumphal Arch (Arcul de Triumf) stands at the top of the central boulevard and was built in 1840 to commemorate the Russian Empire's victory over the Ottomans. The arch is smaller in scale than its Parisian counterpart but no less elegant, and its position at the intersection of the city's main civic spaces, flanked by the government building and the cathedral park, makes it a natural focal point for an afternoon walk through the centre.

National Museum of Fine Arts houses the most significant collection of visual art in Moldova, spread across a handsome building near the city centre. The permanent collection spans Moldovan, Romanian, and European works, with a particularly strong holding of 19th- and 20th-century paintings. Temporary exhibitions rotate regularly, so there's usually something new alongside the core collection.

Moldova National Opera and Ballet Theatre is the country's premier venue for classical performance and worth visiting for the building alone, a grand Soviet-era structure with an ornate interior that seats over a thousand people. The repertoire covers the full operatic and ballet canon, and ticket prices are remarkably reasonable by European standards.
