Granada

Sacromonte Neighbourhood & Caves sits above the Albaicín and has a character entirely its own. This is where Granada's gitano community traditionally lived, carving homes directly into the soft volcanic hillside. Many of those cave dwellings are still inhabited today, and some serve as venues for flamenco tablaos, performances that feel far more rooted here than in any purpose-built theatre. The walk up from the Darro river valley takes about twenty minutes and rewards you with sweeping views across the city.

Religious sites

Granada Cathedral (Catedral de Granada) anchors the city centre with a facade that took over 180 years to complete, and stepping inside reveals one of the most ambitious Renaissance interiors in Spain. The circular main chapel, flooded with light from high windows, is genuinely striking, quite different from the Gothic gloom you might expect. It stands on the site of the city's former Great Mosque, and that layered history adds weight to every stone.

Royal Chapel of Granada (Capilla Real) sits directly beside the cathedral but has a separate entrance and a very different atmosphere: hushed, intimate, and loaded with significance. This is the mausoleum of Ferdinand and Isabella, the monarchs who completed the Reconquista and commissioned Columbus's voyage. Their marble effigies lie side by side, and the sacristy holds a small but remarkable collection of Flemish paintings from their personal collection.

Monastery of La Cartuja (Monasterio de la Cartuja) is worth the short trip north of the city centre for anyone drawn to extreme Baroque decoration. Founded in 1516 at the order of military commander Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the monastery's church interior builds to a sacristy so densely ornamented, marble inlays, gilded stucco, tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl, that it borders on overwhelming. That makes for a sharp contrast with the austere Carthusian life the monks who built it were supposed to be living.

Natural spaces and viewpoints

Mirador de San Nicolás is the square in the Albaicín from which Granada's most photographed view unfolds: the full length of the Alhambra against the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. Come at sunset if you can, when the palace walls shift from ochre to deep amber. Street musicians often set up here in the early evening, and the atmosphere is relaxed rather than rushed. People linger, and rightly so.

Carrera del Darro is the narrow riverside road that runs along the Darro river at the foot of the Alhambra hill, and it might be the most quietly beautiful street in the city. Medieval bridges cross the water at intervals, and the Alhambra towers directly above you on one side while old bath houses and Moorish arches line the other. Walk it early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive and the street fills up.

Alhambra Palace & Fortress and Generalife Gardens

Alhambra Palace & Fortress is the reason many people book a bus to Granada in the first place, and it delivers. The Nasrid Palaces at its heart, intricate stucco carvings, reflecting pools, geometric tilework, represent the peak of Moorish architecture in Europe, and no photograph quite prepares you for the scale and detail in person. Book your timed entry ticket well in advance, especially for the Nasrid Palaces section, as daily visitor numbers are strictly capped.

Generalife Gardens form the summer estate of the Nasrid sultans, set just above the main Alhambra complex on the same hilltop. The gardens are laid out around long water channels and fountains, with rose beds and cypress hedges providing structure throughout the year. Even outside peak bloom season, the combination of running water, mountain air, and views back across the palace rooftops makes this one of the most pleasant outdoor spaces in Andalusia.

Granada Science Park (Parque de las Ciencias)

Granada Science Park (Parque de las Ciencias) offers a change of pace from the city's historic weight. Opened in 1995 and covering over 70,000 square metres, it's one of the largest science museums in Spain, with interactive exhibitions on the human body, biodiversity, and space exploration, including a dedicated ESA section, alongside a planetarium and the BioDomo, a tropical biodiversity enclosure. It works well for all ages and makes for a full half-day visit.
