This small 14th-century Gothic chapel originally served as a charnel house, a place where bones from the adjacent cemetery were stored, and its compact, carefully restored interior tells a quieter, more intimate story than its grand neighbour. The contrast between the two buildings, separated by just a courtyard, is one of the more thought-provoking moments on the main square.

Cultural museums

East Slovak Museum is the oldest and largest museum in eastern Slovakia, with collections spanning archaeology, natural history, and fine art. The standout exhibit is the Košice Gold Treasure, over 3 kg of gold coins discovered beneath a house on the main street in 1935, with no owner ever identified. The building itself, a confident piece of early 20th-century architecture, is worth a look before you even step inside.

Mikluš Prison is one of the most unusual museum experiences in the city. Two connected Gothic townhouses served as a prison and torture chamber from the 17th to the 19th century, and they remain the only medieval residential buildings in Košice to have kept their original character. A short video introduction sets the historical scene before you move through the cells, where the restraints and instruments on display are sobering rather than sensational. It is now a branch of the East Slovak Museum.

Urban iconic buildings

Jakab's Palace is a neo-Gothic fantasy tucked just off the main street, built at the turn of the 20th century for a local landowner. Its turrets, ornamental stonework, and asymmetrical silhouette make it look more like a Loire Valley château than a Slovak townhouse. It is not always open to the public, but the exterior alone is worth the short detour. Go on a clear afternoon when the light catches the pale stone.

Steel Arena is Košice's major indoor venue and Slovakia's only fully multifunctional arena. With a capacity of around 8,300 for ice hockey, it is the home of HC Košice, one of the country's most decorated hockey clubs, and also hosts concerts and large-scale exhibitions. If your visit coincides with a match night, the atmosphere around the arena is electric and gives you a very different side of the city from the historic centre.

Urban squares and plazas

Singing Fountain sits at the heart of Hlavná, Košice's main pedestrian street, and is one of those rare pieces of public infrastructure that genuinely earns its place. The fountain synchronises water jets with music and light after dark, drawing locals and visitors alike for evening performances. It is a good spot to get your bearings when you first arrive. Sit nearby with something from one of the surrounding cafés and watch the street come to life.

Theater and opera

Košice State Theatre is the oldest professional theatre in Slovakia, with a history stretching back to the 19th century. The main building is a grand neo-Baroque structure on the southern end of Hlavná, and its programme covers opera, ballet, and drama across two stages. Košice Botanical Garden offers a calm escape from the city centre, with collections of both native and exotic plant species spread across well-maintained grounds.
