Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque stands at the centre of Baščaršija and is the most important Ottoman mosque in the Balkans. Built in the 16th century, it remains an active place of worship, so visits require modest dress and a moment of quiet respect. The courtyard fountain and the elegant proportions of the dome make it worth pausing over rather than rushing past on the way to the next stop.

Latin Bridge is a short, unassuming stone bridge over the Miljacka River that carries enormous historical weight. It was here, in June 1914, that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, setting off the chain of events that led to World War I. The bridge itself is small enough to cross in under a minute, but standing on it with that context in mind gives you a particular kind of pause. A small museum at the north end fills in the details.

Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica) is the most visually striking building in the city, a Moorish Revival confection of red, yellow, and cream stonework sitting right on the Miljacka riverbank. Originally built during the Austro-Hungarian period, it was devastated by shelling in 1992 and painstakingly restored over two decades. Today it functions as a cultural centre and library, and the interior atrium, with its stained-glass ceiling, is genuinely worth seeing.

Museums

National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Zemaljski Muzej) is the country's oldest museum, founded in 1888, and it covers an impressive range: archaeology, ethnology, natural history, and a botanical garden all under one roof. The undisputed highlight is the Sarajevo Haggadah, a 14th-century illuminated Jewish manuscript that survived the Inquisition, World War II, and the Bosnian War. It is one of the oldest and most valuable Hebrew manuscripts in the world.

War Tunnel Museum (Tunel Spasa) preserves a section of the tunnel dug beneath Sarajevo Airport in 1993, which served as a lifeline for the besieged city, carrying food, weapons, and people in and out during the 1,425-day siege. You can walk through a restored stretch of the original tunnel, which is low, narrow, and immediately clarifying about what survival looked like. The family home above it, where the tunnel entrance was hidden, is also open to visit.

Squares and plazas

Sebilj Fountain is the wooden octagonal fountain at the centre of Baščaršija Square, and it has become the informal symbol of the old city. Pigeons crowd around it in improbable numbers, locals meet beside it, and tourists photograph it constantly. It still manages to feel like a natural gathering point rather than a tourist trap. Local legend says that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, which may explain why the city keeps drawing people back.

Viewpoints and natural spaces

Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija) sits above the old city and offers the clearest panoramic view of Sarajevo spreading out across the valley below. The walk up through the old residential quarter takes about 20 minutes and is pleasant in itself. Sunset here, when the minarets catch the last light and the city starts to glow, genuinely justifies the climb.

Vrelo Bosne (Springs of the Bosna River) lies on the western edge of the city, where the Bosna River emerges from the ground in a series of clear, cold pools surrounded by willows and parkland. It's a popular spot for a long walk or a slow afternoon, and the horse-drawn carriage rides along the tree-lined avenue leading to the springs are a pleasantly unhurried way to arrive. After the urban intensity of the old town, it feels like a different world.

Ruins

Sarajevo Olympic Bobsled & Luge Track (Trebević Mountain) was built for the 1984 Winter Olympics and drew 50,000 spectators during the Games. Abandoned and heavily damaged during the siege of the 1990s, the 1,300-metre concrete track now winds through pine forest covered in layers of graffiti art. You can reach Trebević by cable car from the city centre, and walking the length of the track, with the city visible through the trees below, is one of the more unusual and thought-provoking things you can do in Sarajevo.
