Basilica di Sant'Anastasia is Verona's largest church and a Gothic counterpoint to San Zeno's Romanesque gravity. Construction stretched across nearly two centuries from the late 1200s, and the interior rewards patience. The frescoes are rich, the marble floor is intricate, and Pisanello's fresco of St George above the Pellegrini chapel is considered a masterpiece of International Gothic painting.

Museums and culture

Teatro Romano & Museo Archeologico occupies a hillside site above the Adige, where a Roman theatre from the first century BC has been remarkably well preserved. The attached archaeological museum, housed in a former convent, displays mosaics, bronzes, and glassware that fill in Verona's ancient story. In summer the theatre hosts an outdoor Shakespeare festival, which feels entirely appropriate given the city's literary associations.
