Iglesia Catedral de Coquimbo anchors the city's main square and gives you a sense of how Coquimbo has layered its history over time. The cathedral's neogothic façade is more restrained than you might expect, which makes it quietly elegant rather than overwhelming. Step inside for the cool air and the coloured light that filters through the stained glass onto the stone floor. It's a good pause point between exploring the plaza and heading down toward the waterfront.

Waterfront

Caleta de Pescadores is where the working side of Coquimbo comes into focus. Fishing boats unload their catch here in the early morning, and the dockside restaurants serve ceviche and caldillo de congrio made from whatever came in that day. It's a practical, salt-aired place, and that's exactly what makes it worth visiting. You get a direct read on the city's relationship with the sea rather than a polished version of it.

Bahía de Coquimbo is the wide arc of water that gives the city its shape and its mood. A walk along the bay lets you take in the full sweep of the coastline, with the hills of Coquimbo on one side and the open Pacific on the other. On calm days the water is a deep blue-green, and the bay is busy with pelicans cruising low over the surface. A twenty-minute walk can easily turn into an hour.

Caleta de Guayacán sits a short distance from the city centre and has a quieter, more local feel than the main fishing dock. The small cove is sheltered, the boats are colourful, and the pace is noticeably slower. If you've taken the bus to Coquimbo and want to ease into the city rather than dive straight into the centre, this is a good first stop. Grab a coffee from one of the nearby kiosks and watch the boats.

Beaches

Playa de Guayacán is a calm, sheltered beach tucked into the same cove as the caleta. The water here is generally gentler than on more exposed stretches of the Chilean coast, which makes it popular with families. The beach is not enormous, but it's clean and well-positioned. You can walk between the caleta and the beach in a few minutes, making it easy to combine a seafood lunch with an afternoon swim.

Natural spaces

Cerro El Vigía is the hill that holds the Cruz del Tercer Milenio, but it deserves attention as a viewpoint in its own right. The walk up through the residential streets gives you an unfiltered look at everyday Coquimbo — painted houses, street dogs, kids on bikes — before the city suddenly drops away and the full panorama opens up. Even if you've already visited the cross, coming back at sunset gives you an entirely different experience.

Reserva Nacional Pingüino de Humboldt requires a half-day trip from Coquimbo to Punta de Choros, but it's the kind of excursion that justifies the journey. The reserve protects three islands and the surrounding marine area, and it's home to Humboldt penguins, sea otters, dolphins, and, between October and March, passing whales. Boat tours leave from Punta de Choros and bring you close enough to the penguin colonies to hear them. The reserve covers 888 hectares across the islands and is managed by CONAF.

Barrio Inglés is Coquimbo's most distinctive neighbourhood, a grid of Victorian-era buildings constructed by British engineers and merchants who arrived during the mining boom of the nineteenth century. The architecture — wrought-iron balconies, timber facades, colourful paintwork — has been well preserved and now houses bars, restaurants, and small galleries. Walking through it in the evening, when the lights come on and the restaurants fill up, gives you a strong sense of the city's layered identity.

Plaza de Armas de Coquimbo is the social centre of the city, framed by the cathedral and lined with benches where people actually sit and spend time rather than just pass through. Street vendors, chess players, and schoolchildren in uniform all share the space throughout the day. It's a useful orientation point when you first arrive and a reliable place to return to when you want to feel the rhythm of the city.
