Eindhoven

Eindhoven is one of the Netherlands' most forward-thinking cities, a place where design, technology, and history sit comfortably side by side, giving you a long list of things to do no matter what draws you there. Taking a FlixBus to Eindhoven is straightforward, with connections from cities across the Netherlands and beyond dropping you right into this energetic Noord-Brabant city. From world-class art to flying-saucer architecture and leafy riverside parks, the city rewards curious visitors at every turn.

Museums

Van Abbemuseum is one of Europe's most respected modern and contemporary art museums, and a visit here quickly explains why Eindhoven punches above its weight culturally. The permanent collection spans work from Picasso and Kandinsky through to cutting-edge contemporary artists, while the curatorial approach consistently asks sharp questions about art's relationship to politics and society. The building itself is a pleasure: a 1930s brick original extended by a bold 2003 wing that adds light-filled galleries without overshadowing the older structure.

Philips Museum tells the story of how a small light-bulb factory founded in 1891 grew into a global electronics giant and, in doing so, shaped the entire city around it. Hands-on exhibits let you trace the arc from early incandescent bulbs to shavers, televisions, and medical imaging technology. It's well-paced and genuinely engaging even if corporate history isn't your thing, because the story is really about how one company built a city.

DAF Museum is a treat for anyone with even a passing interest in automotive engineering. Housed in the original DAF factory buildings, the collection traces the Van Doorne brothers' journey from trailer manufacturer in 1928 to the creator of the iconic Variomatic continuously variable transmission, a Dutch innovation that changed small-car design worldwide. Alongside the cars, a large assembly of trucks and prototypes fills the space, making this one of the more substantial transport museums in the country.

Iconic buildings

Evoluon is the building Eindhoven residents point to when they want to explain the city's relationship with ambition. Commissioned by Philips and completed in 1966, this flying-saucer-shaped structure was originally a science and technology museum and remains one of the most recognisable pieces of 20th-century architecture in the Netherlands. Today it functions as a conference and events centre, but the exterior alone, a concrete dome balanced on a ring of slender supports, is worth the trip out to see it up close.

De Blob (Bubble Building / Admirant) anchors the area around Eindhoven's central station with a very different kind of architectural statement. The bulbous, copper-tinted glass form rises above the Admirant shopping passage and has become a reliable landmark for anyone navigating the city centre on foot. It divides opinion, which is arguably the point. It signals that Eindhoven takes design seriously enough to take risks with it.

Cultural centers

Strijp-S is a former Philips industrial campus turned creative neighbourhood, now home to studios, ateliers, restaurants, and event spaces. The brick factory buildings have been repurposed with a light touch, preserving the industrial scale while making room for independent businesses and cultural programming. During Dutch Design Week, held every October, Strijp-S becomes one of the busiest design destinations in Europe.

De Witte Dame (The White Lady) is another Philips-era building with a second life, housing the city's public library, a design academy, and several creative businesses. The white-painted facade that gives it its name stands on the Emmasingel and has become a quiet symbol of Eindhoven's ability to reinvent its industrial past without erasing it. The ground-floor café is a good spot to pause between sights.

Historic site

St. Catherine's Church (Sint-Catharinakerk) offers a different kind of landmark in a city better known for modernism. The neo-Gothic church, designed by Pierre Cuypers, the same architect behind Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, dominates the Catharinaplein square with its twin towers and detailed stonework. Step inside for the stained glass and the calm, and take a moment to appreciate that Eindhoven's story stretches back well before Philips arrived.

Park

Genneper Parken is a broad stretch of parkland on the southern edge of the city where the river Dommel winds through open meadows, woodland, and recreational areas. You'll find a working historical farm, sports facilities, and enough space to properly decompress after a day of urban sightseeing. Locals use it year-round, which tells you something about how well it works.

Square

Stationsplein is the open plaza in front of Eindhoven Centraal that sets the tone for the city the moment you arrive. Flanked by the Blob and several other contemporary structures, it's a lively transit hub that doubles as a social space, with terraces and market stalls filling it on warmer days. If you're arriving by FlixBus, this is your first impression, and it's a good one.
