Museums

Gutenberg Museum is one of the most focused and satisfying museums in Germany. Johannes Gutenberg developed his movable-type printing press in Mainz around the mid-15th century, and this museum tells that story with real depth. The highlight is a pair of original Gutenberg Bibles displayed in a darkened vault. Fragile, extraordinary objects that make the scale of the printing revolution feel suddenly very real. Live demonstrations of a working press run regularly throughout the day.

Landesmuseum Mainz (Mainz State Museum) covers the region's history from prehistoric times through to the 20th century, but its Roman collection is the reason to visit. Mainz was the major Roman military base of Mogontiacum, and the museum holds one of the finest collections of Roman stonework in Germany, including the remarkable column of Jupiter. Museum of Ancient Seafaring (Museum für Antike Schifffahrt) is a genuinely unusual find. Housed in a converted railway hall, it displays five Roman warships discovered during construction work in Mainz in 1981, preserved timbers dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries AD.
