Things to do in Bruges

About Bruges

Bruges is a modern day medieval town. There are plenty of things to see and do and a weekend trip to this small Flemish town will certainly not disappoint. Famous for its castles and chocolate, there are sights and treats for everybody of every age. Known as “Venice of the North”, Bruges has countless canals and streams that surround the city. With more than 80 bridges, it is quite easy to navigate through the city by foot or bike. Yet, of course, we have to suggest getting a boat tour around Bruges. It is a fantastic way to see the town and the many hidden gems that wouldn’t be found otherwise. With our FlixBus bus stop so centrally located, it is easy to explore this wonderful city!

Places of Interest in Bruges

There are so many historical buildings to see that it wouldn’t be possible to see them all in a weekend.

Although, there are a few must-sees during your bus trip to Bruges:

The Groeningemuseum – the most celebrated art gallery in Bruges that is most famous for its Flemish and Renaissance works.

Heilig-Bloedbasiliek – a roman catholic basilica from the 12th century.

The Belfry of Bruges – a medieval bell tower that has been in the city since the mid-13th century. While the tower itself is extremely aesthetically pleasing from the outside, the view of the city from the top is spectacular. For a small fee, you can climb the 83-metre-high tower, and see beautiful Bruges from a different perspective.

Culture and History of Bruges

This romantic town has a very cultural feeling. It’s small proximity make it the perfect place to lose yourself amongst the cobbled streets and many canals. Similar to the middle ages, classical music is still extremely popular in the city and amongst locals. Have a look before your trip and see if you can catch the ‘Anima Eterna Brugge’ orchestra or the ‘Symphonic Orchestra of Flanders’. Both have their permanent homes in the city, but they often tour internationally. We recommend you plan ahead so you don’t miss an iconic performance.
In terms of culture, taking a walk into the main square is the ideal way to appreciate Bruges in just a few hours. The spectacular square is surrounded by visual masterpieces, with many galleries, churches and towers offering tours about the history and culture of the city.

Nightlife in Bruges

While this Flemish town is not especially wild, Bruges is famous for its many beers and bars. In the summer time, the square is full of life. While the prices are certainly not cheap, the views of the medieval buildings and the fantastic service are definitely worth it. For any beer-lovers the selection available is amongst the best in the world.

We suggest a few of these bars:
‘t Brugs Beertje – a selection of 300 beers, and a warm and welcoming environment.

De Garre – a well-hidden medieval bar on the narrowest street in the city. Their most famous beer (called De Garre) is so strong that bartenders won’t serve you more than 3.

And if you are in the mood for a wilder night, we recommend Bras Café. This venue is quite popular amongst young people in Bruges, mostly because of their themed nights, fancy-dress and good drinks promotions! But whatever you get up to, have fun, stay safe and we’ll see you on your FlixBus home!
