Tongoy

Waterfront

Paseo Costero is the coastal walkway that connects Tongoy's different neighbourhoods along the shoreline. It's the kind of place where a slow evening stroll makes complete sense. The views across the bay shift constantly as the light changes, and there are benches positioned at just the right intervals for sitting and watching the fishing boats come in.

Puerto Velero is a small marina and beach area a few kilometres north of Tongoy proper, popular with sailors and anyone who enjoys watching boats. The calm anchorage makes it one of the more active sailing spots in the region, and the beach beside the marina is sheltered enough for paddling and kayaking. It also has a handful of seafood restaurants right on the water.

Markets

Caleta de Pescadores is Tongoy's working fishing dock, where local fishermen bring in their daily catch of scallops, sea bass, and congrio. You can buy fish directly from the boats early in the morning, and the surrounding stalls sell everything from fresh shellfish to dried seafood to take home. The scallops from this bay are considered some of the finest in Chile, and eating them here, simply grilled at one of the nearby spots, is hard to beat.

Mercado Gastronómico de Tongoy is the more organised counterpart to the Caleta, with a covered market where local vendors serve up traditional Chilean seafood dishes in a relaxed, communal setting. It's a good place to try a bowl of chupe de mariscos or a plate of machas a la parmesana without having to choose between a dozen different restaurants. Come hungry and come at lunch when everything is freshest.

Humedal de Pachingo is a coastal wetland protected under the international Ramsar Convention and managed by Chile's Ministry of National Assets. It sits just outside the town and serves as a critical stopover for migratory bird species, including flamingos and various shorebirds that pass through during seasonal migrations. Bring binoculars and a bit of patience. The best sightings tend to happen in the quiet early morning hours.

Mirador Cerro La Virgen is a hilltop viewpoint that gives you a full panoramic view of the Tongoy peninsula, the bay, and the surrounding coastline stretching in both directions. The walk up is short but steep, and the reward at the top is one of the clearest perspectives you'll find of just how dramatically the land juts out into the Pacific. Sunset from here, with the bay turning gold below, is genuinely worth the climb.

Iglesia de Tongoy is a modest but historically significant church dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima, originally commissioned in 1868 by businessman Tomás Urmeneta, who had the timber and religious ornaments shipped over from France. It stands near the centre of town and remains an active parish, its simple wooden interior a quiet contrast to the noise of the beach just a few streets away.
